#RIGHTTOKNOW

Everyone has the right to know what is happening. Education has been failing us for decades. As a teacher, it is clear to me that there remains a profound mismatch between the reality of climate change and the kind of education that we are providing to our older school children.

WHY A CLIMATE ACADEMY?

INTEGRATING CLIMATE SCIENCE AND SUSTAINABLE THINKING, INTO CURRENT-DAY EDUCTION OF OLDER SCHOOL CHILDREN

The Paris Agreement (2015) was a commitment by all the nations of the world to keep global heating “well below 2°C, and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5°C”.

Cut11Percent is an annually updated set of figures that shows what is required to meet the objective of the Paris Agreement. It provides the required annual emissions reductions for the 1.5°C target and the 2°C target – for every nation in the world.

So why do we only use slogans or broad arguments for the climate crisis? Why are we so timid? Why do we not ask for results on climate action in the same robust, direct and transparent way?

Our radically softer approach to government performance on this one issue is truly bizarre. There is a carbon budget remaining for both 1.5°C and 2°C heating. It is very well understood by advanced scientific research. It is the most fundamentally important budget for human civilization.

WHAT DO WE TEACH?

CUT11PERCENT; A SIMPLE SET OF ANNUALLY UPDATED FIGURES THAT SHOW WHAT IS REQUIRED TO MEET THE OBJECTIVES OF THE PARIS AGREEMENT.

The Paris Agreement (2015) was a commitment by all the nations of the world to keep global heating “well below 2°C, and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5°C”.

For the economy, for crime, for everything, we measure the success or failure of our governments by examining the key performance data. Indeed, for COVID-19, the sense of urgency led to the creation of dashboards of continually updated data.

So why do we not ask for results on climate action in the same robust, direct and transparent way?

To hold our governments to account, we need numbers. Science. And it is this vital data that the Climate Academy teaches to older school children.

The basic ingredients for the science we teach is the global carbon budget remaining for both 1.5°C and 2°C heating. It is the most fundamentally important budget for human civilization.

Combined with the United Nations' development level of each country worldwide, the carbon budget per country can be expressed in a simple per capita / per country percentage.

These numbers are very well understood by advanced scientific research and are summarised as Cut11Percent – a European average goals of emission cuts per country.

It is the core ambition of the Climate Academy to teach these numbers, and to get them out into the democratic space.
